‘Because of people like you’: In-N-Out worker says they had to take 67 out of their system. Why?

If you don’t understand the “6-7” trend, you’re not alone.

Like many memes, “six-seven” is a bit difficult to explain. While the phrase originated in a song by the rapper Skrilla, there’s no real connection between that song and its contemporary usage. As noted by The Washington Post, the modern meme essentially involves noticing whenever the numbers six and seven appear next to each other, then freaking out about it.

“It’s more of an ironic thing,” explained a 15-year-old interviewed for the piece. “People are making fun of the fact that it’s not funny.”

Even though the meme itself doesn’t have much meaning, it has had a significant cultural impact. The impact has been so significant, in fact, that it’s allegedly changed how chains like In-N-Out process orders.

Did In-N-Out Really Get Rid of the Number 67?

Over the past few weeks, there’s been a rumor circulating throughout the internet that In-N-Out, which announces customer orders by number, removed the number “67” from its lineup.

Two weeks ago, a user on Reddit asked if the number had been removed. In their post, they wrote, “Did In-N-Out remove number 67 from being called out?” According to them, they noticed their machine seemed to automatically skip the number. Commenters affirmed that, in their experience, the number had been removed as of the last week of November.

Following that, a video went around showing an employee confirming the claim. In the clip, they tell a customer that 67 had been removed from their system “because of people like you.”

Now, PEOPLE says they have confirmed with a single employee at a Los Angeles location that the number had been removed from their ticket system and had been removed for a month. Furthermore, they added that In-N-Out has also banned the number “69” from its ticket system.

Was It Necessary to Remove the Number?

In-N-Out has not released an official statement on the topic. Still, employees have been complaining about the “67” problem for quite some time.

As the meme became more popular, so too did viral videos of people screaming and celebrating whenever the number was called at In-N-Out.

These videos became such a problem that, even before the removal of the number from their system, locations were figuring out their own ways to avoid saying it.

In a post from two months ago, an employee asked other workers if they had “instituted any protocol for guest #67? Omitting it from the available numbers, making sure it’s only a drive-thru order, etc?”

Commenters stated that some locations simply ran the 67 order as a single water cup. This prevented it from being assigned to a customer and announced. One even claimed that they did this for the numbers 60 through 70, just to be safe.

It’s Not Just In-N-Out

In-N-Out is one of many places that is currently trying to figure out how to deal with the 6-7 issue.

For example, the Wall Street Journal reported that the prevalence of the meme was making life difficult for teachers. Teachers claimed that they avoided numbering groups. They also refrained from asking kids to turn to page 67, or even mentioning the two numbers in succession.

In contrast, some have embraced it. Both Wendy’s and Pizza Hut briefly offered 67-themed promotions.

How much longer will businesses have to deal with this? One article from 2018 in The Outline speculated that the lifespan of a meme was, roughly, four months. That said, the 67 meme has been floating around the internet since at least January 2025 — meaning it might have more staying power than anyone expected.

On your next trip to In-N-Out, don’t be surprised if you don’t hear the number 67 — at least, not from the employees. No promises can be made about their customers, however!
