POLICE are continuing the hunt for a killer after a young man died from stab wounds inflicted on Beaumont Street in the early hours of Sunday.
Phone footage capturing the moments leading up to the fatal stabbing, which the Newcastle Herald has chosen not to publish due to its confronting nature, has been circulating on social media on Monday.
In the graphic video, a group of people can be seen having a physical altercation on the road, and others can be heard yelling.
Newcastle police and detectives from the homicide squad have been investigating the stabbing under Strike Force Mannum.
It's understood mobile phone video has been provided to police as part of the investigation and officers have made a public appeal for anyone with information or footage to come forward.
Emergency services were first called to Beaumont Street at Hamilton, in Newcastle, at about 2.40am on Sunday, November 17, after reports a man had been injured.
Police found a 22-year-old man suffering stab wounds and paramedics rushed him to hospital, where he later died.
A police officer and members of the public at the popular nightlife strip had been attempting to treat the man's "significant stab wounds" where he was found near the post office.
Beaumont Street was closed for between Tudor and Donald streets for several hours on Sunday as police combed the crime scene and collected evidence, including CCTV footage from the area.
The investigation will enter its third day on Tuesday and police confirmed no arrests had been made by Monday afternoon.
"It's important for us to understand what happened to this young man," Newcastle police commander Superintendent Kylie Endemi told media on Sunday.
"It's important for us to do that so we can assist his poor family in understanding how and why this young man passed away.
"They are going through every family's worst nightmare."
Superintendent Endemi said there were people in the community who could help police piece together what happened and urged them to please come forward to give the young man's grieving family answers.
One Hamilton resident told the Herald they heard the "usual noise" in the early hours of the morning before "screaming and carrying on" and then a "plethora of sirens".
A report will be prepared for the coroner, police said.
Any witnesses, anyone with information, mobile phone footage, CCTV or dashcam footage should contact police by calling Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or making a report on the online page.
