Bearsden care home resident allowed to eat breakfast with faeces on her hands

A Bearsden care home resident was allowed to eat breakfast with faeces on their hands.

Care Assistant Kevin Hollett didn't clean the pensioner's hands of faeces at Westerton Care Home in March 2020. Hollett then let the resident, 'AA' have breakfast knowing the mess had not been removed.

The staff member's behaviour was slammed as 'serious and degrading' by the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC). A warning to stay on his registration for a period of 12 months came into effect as of July 12.

A statement from SSSC chiefs read: " Social service workers are expected to work in a safe and effective manner and respect and maintain the dignity of the service users they care for. Service Users, their families and employers have the right to expect that they will be looked after by those trusted with their care and well-being, often at a time in their lives when they are at their most vulnerable.

"You failed to clean a resident’s hands of faeces and allowed her to eat breakfast when you knew they were covered in faeces. Your behaviour was deliberate as you could have prevented the resident from eating breakfast with faeces on her hands.

"Such behaviour is serious, degrading and breached the trust placed in you by the service user, her family and your employer. Your actions also placed the service user at risk of physical harm due to the risk of infection and risk of emotional harm.

"We need to find your fitness to practise impaired to make sure you don’t let this happen again. This will protect the public."

It continued: "Your behaviour was serious, occurred inside work and breached the trust placed in you by the service users, their families and your employer You were an experienced carer and took the decision to prioritise giving other residents their breakfast rather than taking the time to ensure the safety, well-being and dignity of the service user.

"You have recognised the seriousness of your behaviour and apologised for your actions. The incident was isolated in nature and the SSSC are not aware of any previous concerns having been raised regarding your behaviour ."
