With the second preseason game in the books, the next round of roster cuts are upon us, where the Chicago Bears have to trim their roster from 85 to 80 players before 3 p.m. CT on Tuesday.
This is the second of three roster cuts the Bears will have to make this summer.
- Tuesday, Aug. 16: 90 to 85
- Tuesday, Aug. 23: 85 to 80
- Tuesday, Aug. 30: 80 to 53
The Bears have now trimmed their roster to 80 players. Here’s a look at their cuts below:
WR Dazz Newsome waived
The Bears have waived former sixth-round wide receiver Dazz Newsome. Newsome was among those competing for a roster spot in a wide-open receiver group behind Darnell Mooney. While Newsome has made some solid plays during training camp and preseason, he had his share of mistakes with dropped passes and couldn’t carve out a role for himself on special teams, which was his best shot at a roster spot.
OT Julien Davenport waived
The Bears have terminated the contract of offensive tackle Julien Davenport, who signed with the team this offseason. Davenport spent time with the Texans (2017-18), Dolphins (2019-20) and most recently the Colts (2021), where he appeared in 60 games including 32 starts. Davenport was on the outside looking in at offensive tackle.
FB Jake Bargas waived
The Bears just signed fullback Jake Bargas earlier this week in a corresponding roster move after wide receiver David Moore landed on injured reserve. The addition of Bargas might’ve been in response to fullback Khari Blasingame being sidelined with a brace on his arm during the second preseason game. But Blasingame returned to practice this week.
DT LaCale London
The Bears have waived defensive tackle LaCale London, who signed with the team as an undrafted free agent back in 2020. London spent most of the last two seasons on Chicago’s practice squad, where he appeared in one game against the Vikings last season. Unfortunately, London hasn’t been able to stand out among a competitive defensive line group.
CB BoPete Keyes
The Bears waived cornerback BoPete Keyes, who was signed to the team’s practice squad last December. He appeared in just one game. Keyes was competing for a roster spot among a crowded cornerbacks group, where other players lower on the depth chart, like Lamar Jackson and Jaylon Jones, managed to stand out.
