The Chicago Bears appear to have reached rock bottom through the first three weeks of the 2023 NFL season. They’re 0-3 — riding an active 13-game losing streak — and it’s not going to get better anytime soon.
It’s been a disastrous start for quarterback Justin Fields in his third NFL season, where he’s regressed from last season when he was a top playmaker in the league.
Buy Bears TicketsHeading into Sunday’s game, Fields vowed to be less “robotic” and go out there and play his game. But he never really got a chance to do that in a 41-10 blowout loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Fields was asked about what he’s learned through this brutal three-game stretch to start the year. And listening to his response, it’s hard not to feel like he’s a man resigned to his fate.
“I’m looking at it like the big picture, life in general to be honest with you,” Fields said after the game, via Courtney Cronin. “I think this past week has had me kind of look at it like what are the important things in life? Because you know when things are going good, you feel me, not say whatever. I think these past couple of weeks have made me appreciate the little things in life like being able to play this game.
“Every opportunity I get to go out there and play, I’m going to have fun. I’m going to play my hardest and, you know, just thank god for giving me the ability to play. So, no matter what the scoreboard is, I’m going to keep doing the same mindset and just pushing to keep moving forward.”
It’s disappointing considering the expectations for this season. Fields was expected to take a step forward in his development, especially with an upgraded supporting cast around him. Unfortunately, it’s been more of the same — where Fields appears to be in a worse situation than last year.
If there’s one reprieve, the Bears will welcome the winless Denver Broncos — who just lost by 50 points and gave up 70 points — to Soldier Field on Sunday. This might be Chicago’s best chance at getting a win.
