Bears QB Justin Fields admits coaching contributed to his ‘robotic’ play

Bears quarterback Justin Fields will be the first to tell you he didn’t feel like himself during the team’s Week 2 loss to the Buccaneers.

To the naked eye, it was clear that something was off. While Fields has had his issues with hitting receivers, last season we saw him play off instincts and take off when he needed to extend a play.

But that wasn’t evident against Tampa Bay, where Fields seemed to be glued to the pocket to his own detriment, which led to several sacks. It got to the point where people were referring to Fields as “broken” by this coaching staff.

Fields got honest with the Chicago media on Wednesday and admitted that he felt “robotic” against the Buccaneers, where he didn’t feel like he was playing his game. But he’s determined not to let that happen again.

“I felt like I was playing robotic,” Fields said. “My goal this week is to say F it and just play football. That’s when I play my best when I am out there playing free. I am going to go out there and be me.”

So why was Fields thinking too much against the Buccaneers?

“Coaching,” he said, confirming what others have pointed out through these first two games.

Fields elaborated, saying he’s being fed a lot of information and thinking too much as the coaches essentially try to make him a pocket passer. Fields wants to stop thinking so much and just go out and play his game, similar to what we saw last season.

Well, it sounds like Fields is finally ready to take control with his future in Chicago in question. Fantasy owners might want to take note.
