Bear Necessities: Cole Kmet credits opportunity, execution to recent success

After being nonexistent in the passing game in the first six games, Bears tight end Cole Kmet has found impressive success over the last month, where he’s been a dependable target for quarterback Justin Fields.

In the last three games, Kmet has scored five touchdowns. Two of those came in Sunday’s 31-30 loss to Detroit, where Kmet caught four passes for a team-best 74 yards, including a 50-yard bomb from Fields.

Kmet pointed to opportunity and execution as the reasons why his production has soared over the last three weeks.

“I’m the one on the receiving end as it’s happened in the past three weeks,” Kmet said. “Being able to have a guy like Justin, like you don’t know run or pass, that’s a big deal for me. All the blocking I do in-line and being able to release off of that and do some things kind of off of the runs we have, you know, have really helped me out a lot too. And then you just get good matchups against guys. You know I’m 6’6″ going up against a DB body. That’s usually going to turn out pretty well, I think.”

Kmet’s five touchdowns are tied for the second-most by a tight end in the NFL, with Baltimore’s Mark Andrews. Kmet trails only Kansas City’s Travis Kelce, who has eight scores.
