TV star Alex Jones revealed that she "ran away" from one of her first jobs after finding it "terrifying". On Tuesday's episode of The One Show the 46-year-old from Ammanford opened up about her experience of working in a call centre for an energy company "a long time ago" as she and co-host Jermaine Jenas interviewed actress Katherine Kelly.
The Happy Valley star is set to appear in a new sitcom called Ruby Speaking, which will air later this week on ITVX, with comedian Jayde Adams. The show us set in a call centre and, upon hearing about this, Alex was prompted to reveal her brief stint in the industry. She said: "First of all it's a brilliant place for a sitcom to be set. I didn't last long though, Katherine.
"I think actually – I can say this now, it was a long time ago – it was for an energy provider, I won't say what they were called. And my friends and I, we ran away!"
She added: "Because it was so terrifying. You had to put a code in to go to the loo, code in for coffee, I had a boss similar to Vicki (Katherine's character on the sitcom). Not good. It's character-building. Grounding!" Jenas, however, revealed he'd gone straight from having a paper round to becoming a footballer.
Later in the show Leigh Francis – whose alter ego is Keith Lemon – appeared on the sofa to discuss his new tour My First Time. During the interview he had the presenters in fits of giggles as, upon revealing he was also taking part in Portrait Artist of the Year in 2023 as a painter Alex misheard him and thought he'd said "pottery artist of the year". This prompted Leigh to enunciate the competition name but in a very strong Welsh accent, causing Alex to laugh and add: "Oh sorry!"
The One Show airs on BBC One weekdays at 7pm.
