BBC's The Weakest Link sees Iwan Thomas ask 'are you serious' as he's voted off the show

The Weakest Link was back on screens tonight as presenter Romesh Ranganathan invited celebrity athletes to take part in the back-stabbing game show. The classic quiz sees contestants answer questions against the clock before brutally voting off the 'weakest link' at the end of every round.

During the episode that aired on BBC One on Saturday, April 22, Aimee Fuller, Iwan Thomas, Carlton Cole, Ryan Sidebottom, Kadeena Cox, Perri Shakes-Drayton, Pamela Cookey and Phil Vickery took part to bank money for their chosen charities.

As is the spirit of the game, which previously had the formidable Anne Robinson at the helm, Romesh took no time at all in making some quips at the sports stars following a few poor performances. For more showbiz and television stories get our newsletter here.

At the end of round four, a tie-break revealed former track and field athlete Perrie and former European and Commonwealth 400 metre champion Iwan had two votes each from their fellow players. It was then revealed to viewers at home that Perrie only got one answer correct and was the weakest link.

The round also saw Iwan freeze and fail to give the answer "prop" to the last question in the round, which read: "In shared words what P is both a portable object used on the set of a play and a position in the front row of a rugby scrum?"

Following the results, Romesh asked Iwan: "How do you feel about the votes you've received?"

"I think I got two right and I banked a lot, I'm just angry at myself for not getting 'prop', I just had a freeze in my brain," Iwan responded.

Romesh said: "It's interesting about you getting the answers right and stuff because I think when you're trying to decide who to vote for you're trying to think what you can remember from the round and unfortunately for you the last thing that happened was you sort of shutting down for a little bit."

He then explained: "So in the event of a tie, it's down to the strongest link in that round to decide who goes, Pamela that is you. Would you like to stick with who you said or change your mind?"

Pamela, who had originally written down Iwan, decided to stick with her decision. "Oh god, it's hard, I'm sorry Iwan," she said before joking her husband would otherwise never forgive her after Iwan failed to get the rugby question right.

"Really?" Iwan then asked, before adding: "Are you serious? I got two right and banked... Okay, it's cool."

"It doesn't feel like it's cool," Romesh joked, before adding: "It feels like it's very far from cool to be honest with you," as Iwan began to laugh.

Speaking to the cameras afterward, Iwan joked: "If you put it into my old life, I was down to the last 50 metres of the race, I was clawing it back. I could see Michael Johnson's back. I was reeling him in. And then someone in the crowd called Pam went.. [slap] 'see you later.'"

Perri was voted off in the next round with Pamela once again having to chose between a tie-break as the strongest link. She chose to stick with Perri with Romesh joking: "Better reaction than Iwan's, so that's good."
