BBC's Louise Minchin pays tribute to 'wonderful friend' Bill Turnbull after his death

Louise Minchin has described her late friend Bill Turnbull as a "wonderful friend" and "much-loved broadcaster" as she paid tribute to him.

Louise, 53, presented BBC Breakfast alongside Bill for many years before his sad death at age 66.

Earlier on Thursday, it was announced he had died following a 'challenging' five year battle with prostate cancer.

The news was shared on the very programme he had hosted for 15 years, BBC Breakfast, as his family shared a statement.

Following the sad announcement, I'm A Celebrity star Louise, 53, has paid tribute to him.

She remembered how Bill would make her laugh whenever they presented the news programme together and added: "He had a wicked, naughty sense of humour which was infectious, and the audience and the programme team loved him for it."

In a tribute shared by The Sun, Louise called Bill "talented", "insightful" and a "rigorous journalist with a sharp eye for detail".

Louise added: "Both inside and outside work he was kind and generous with his time, and his wise words were much appreciated by me and many others.

"His brave, selfless decision to talk openly about his diagnosis of terminal prostate cancer has been lifesaving.

"I have been inundated with messages from men who have since been to the doctor because of him."

Meanwhile, on her Twitter page, Louise added: "Sending my love and thoughts to the family of my wonderful friend Bill Turnbull. He was a brilliant journalist, a stickler for accuracy, passionate about @BBCBreakfast and a fabulously supportive and kind team-player. Most of all he was great fun, I love how he made me laugh. Xx".

Louise joins a number of TV stars who have paid tribute to Bill following the sad news, including Susanna Reid.

"But above all, he was devoted to his family and I am heartbroken for them. RIP Bill. We will miss you so much".

While Piers Morgan added: "RIP Bill Turnbull, 66. One of the best broadcasters in Britain, and such a smart, funny, warm & generous-spirited man.

"Fought his illness with typical stoicism, courage and humour. Bill made presenting live TV look so effortless, which was his great talent. Such sad news."

Bill's heartbroken wife Sarah, known as Sesi, released a statement read out on BBC Breakfast on Thursday, paying tribute to Bill as they announced he had passed away peacefully at his home in Suffolk on Wednesday.

An emotional Naga Munchetty read: "Our lovely Billy died yesterday evening. Almost five years after being diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer.

"The last week of his life was very special as the whole family was with him and they shared some wonderful moments.

"Although Bill was often in pain, he was dignified and brave throughout and he was his usual determined self right until the very end. He made us laugh everyday. We are immensely proud of him. He was the heart of our family. It's hard to imagine life without him."
