As it remains pretty dark and cold here in Wales viewers can be transported to the sunny skies and gorgeous sands of the fictional Caribbean island of Saint Marie, where everything is not what it seems, in the 12th series of Death in Paradise. The murder mystery drama, set on a gorgeous Caribbean island, is back on BBC One.
Although Saint Marie may seem idyllic, many complex and tricky murders take place on the island leaving British detective DI Neville Parker and his team to solve the crimes. The show began in 2011 and quickly became well-loved by viewers.

Now it is time to head back to the Caribbean and its murders for the new series of the show. Here is everything you need to know.
When does Death in Paradise begin on BBC One?
Death in Paradise will begin on BBC One on Friday, January 6 at 9pm. Episodes will air weekly and the show is expected to remain in the 9pm Friday slot on BBC One.
There will be eight episodes in the series and the episodes will be available on iPlayer after they have aired on BBC One.
What is the Death in Paradise plot?
In each episode the police force in Saint Marie will face a new murder to solve. The new series will kick off with the death of a celebrity astronomer and a change of job for the character Darlene.
Neville and his team will also come face to face with ‘Preppers’ who are digging for the apocalypse on a Saint Marie hillside when disaster ensues, as well as investigating an estate agent murdered during the private sale of a picturesque beach. Meanwhile, Marlon leads a counterfeit goods case to impress the Commissioner.
Commissioner Selwyn Patterson is also coming to terms with the knowledge that he has a secret daughter, something he found out at the end of the last series.
Who is in the Death in Paradise cast?
Ralf Little as DI Neville Parker: Playing the main character loveable DI Neville Parker who is always suffering from some sort of injury or illness is Ralf Little. Ralf is an actor, writer, and former semi-professional footballer who mainly works in TV comedy.
He has previously starred in The Royle Family and Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps. The 42-year-old has played Neville since 2019.
Don Warrington as Commissioner Selwyn Patterson: The formidable Commissioner Patterson is played by Don Warrington. He is best known for playing Philip Smith in the ITV sitcom Rising Damp and was awarded an MBE in 2008.
Thaj Miles as Officer Marlon Pryce: Marlon, who is eager to become a Sergeant, is played by Thaj Miles. He has previously starred in Class Dismissed and Flunked.
Shantol Jackson as D.S. Naomi Thomas: Starring as D.S. Naomi Thomas is Shantol Jackson. She has starred in the film Yardie, which was directed by Idris Elba, and the short film Sugar.
Ginny Holder as Darlene: In her first full series of Death in Paradise is Ginny Holder as Darlene. Ginny has starred in the BBC medical drama Holby City and Doctors.
Elizabeth Bourgine as Catherine Bordey: Helping Neville find love is Catherine Bordey who is played by Elizabeth Bourgine. Elizabeth is credited with more than 60 roles in TV and film, mostly French productions.
Where was Death in Paradise filmed?
Death in Paradise is filmed on the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe. Ralf spoke about what it was like to be back filming on the island for series 12.
He said: "It’s always exciting to be asked back... I still love it here and it feels like home now. I know the area, I know a lot of the locals, I speak the language pretty well."
