Crime fans have been eagerly awaiting BBC One's new drama, Sherwood. Written by award-winning James Graham (whose previous achievements include Finding Neverland), Graham has drawn his inspiration for the series from real-life events in the Nottinghamshire village where he grew up.
The fictional series takes the viewer on a journey to a divided community where two shocking and unexpected killings have taken place. A massive manhunt ensues but as suspicion and antipathy build - both between lifelong neighbours and towards the police forces descending on the town - the killings threaten to inflame historic divisions.
Graham explains: "Sherwood is essentially a six-part thriller, but it’s hugely personal to me and inspired in part by real events in my hometown in Nottinghamshire. It is a contemporary drama and at its heart are two devastating killings which spark a massive manhunt and shatter a community that is already fractured after the divisive effect of the miners' strike 40 years before."
Starring David Morrissey and Lesley Manville, the 6-parter airs for the first time tonight, Monday, June 13. James Graham adds that being from Nottingham and a red wall town has "completely shaped my philosophy around trying to see all points of view".
David Morrissey, the actor playing the drama's police chief, added: "This is a drama that is predominantly present day but shows a much more complex time around the miners’ strike. It was very important to give a voice to all of those people. I am very proud of the drama.”
