BBC News hosts put on a united front with rare selfie amid string of axes at channel

BBC News hosts have put on a united front in a rare selfie together following a string of axes at the channel.

Long-serving presenter Martine Croxall posed with Kasia Madera and Karin Giannone in the pub.

The group looked to be enjoying a bottle of rose wine together with fellow presenters Geeta Guru-Murthy and Annita McVeigh.

The cuts come after the beeb announced it had decided to merge the BBC News and BBC World channels in a bid to save money.

Captioning the snap, Maxine wrote: “Rarely seen in the same room together but it’s magic when it happens.”

Fans were quick to comment underneath the post, with many voicing their outrage at the cuts.

One wrote: “This has made me cry with both sadness and happiness. I’m so happy to see you all together. It’s an abysmal act of shame what’s happened and you guys are the best in the business! You are loved by thousands across the globe.”

Another said: “So much talent on one picture.”

A third commented: “Wow, the best of BBC together.”

While a fourth joked: “That’s like crossing streams in ghostbusters... but one hell of a news programme.”

Maxine presented her final bulletin last week, but is still employed by the beeb (BBC)

Martine signed off her last bulletin on the BBC News Channel.

Thanking viewers she said: “As you probably know, a single news operation will be with you from Monday.

“This is me signing off from the BBC News Channel in its current iteration from my happy place, Studio E.

“It has been the greatest privilege to broadcast to you from here all this time. Thank you for joining us.”

Although it hasn’t been announced what Martine will present next, she is still set to be employed by the BBC and has teased viewers to “watch this space”.

Last year Maxine was taken off air after making a 'gleeful' comment about Boris Johnson (BBC)

At the end of last year, Martine was briefly taken off air for after making a ‘gleeful’ comment about Boris Johnson pulling out of the Tory leadership race live on air.

She said: “Well, this is all very exciting, isn’t it? Am I allowed to be gleeful? Well I am.”

Some viewers, including several Tory MPs, complained to the channel claiming the comments displayed political bias.

BBC presenters are supposed to remain impartial when broadcasting the news. It was later ruled she had breached impartiality rules.

Other hosts who have recently got the chop or left the channel include Joanna Gosling, Shaun Ley, David Eades and Tim Wilcox.

The BBC said around 50 jobs were expected to be lost on and off air as the two BBC news channel merged together.

Matthew Amroliwala, Christian Fraser, Yalda Hakim, Lucy Hockings and Maryam Moshiri will lead the new line-up.
