The BBC said Sir Paul McCartney’s headline Glastonbury performance was not broadcast live due to the “complexity” of the event. Despite the majority of the performances being shown live on BBC iPlayer, Sir Paul’s show was not aired on the broadcaster’s channels until an hour into his set.
The BBC said in a statement: “This year we are delighted to bring audiences our most extensive coverage of Glastonbury to date. Paul McCartney’s much-anticipated set was broadcast on BBC One at 10.30pm as well as on Radio 2 and will be available on BBC iPlayer and BBC Sounds.
“Due to the complexity of broadcasting an event of this scale and the volume of performances we cover, there is sometimes variation between performances taking place and their transmission.”
The decision left some fans at home disgruntled as they couldn't watch the iconic performance live.
@Mugger1dge questioned: "Any idea why it's not live." @Barchetta66 added: "No bloody teasers because it ain't on the telly!!!"
@putthetellyon angrily tweeted: "Well if that's the case then it should be explained by the BBC and not presented to us as if it's going out totally live at 10.30. I and many others just hate false information, it may be the case it's always been like that but don't promote it as live! #Glastonbury #PaulMcCartney."
@wahaab6279 said: "He's playing now but BBC deciding to put it on an hour later." @woodina5 agreed: "What a stupid idea to delay the headline set Paul McCartney #Glastonbury2022."
Other Twitter users found the funny side of the situation. @popwinesglasgow joked: "Where's Macca?!? I can't stay up this late at my age!!! @BBCiPlayer @PaulMcCartney @thebeatles."
