BBC apologises for 'Manchester United are rubbish' on-screen message gaffe

The BBC has apologised after a message that said “ Manchester United are rubbish” appeared on screen in a technical gaffe.

Viewers were left in stitches as the message appeared during an update on the tennis during the 9am to 10am news broadcast earlier today.

Screenshots from the broadcast quickly went viral on social media following the gaffe.

BBC News presenter Annita McVeigh apologised to viewers and Manchester United fans later in the morning.

The journalist explained that the error happened as someone trained on writing messages on the ticker.

“Some of you may have noticed something pretty unusual on the ticker that runs along the bottom of the screen making a comment about Manchester United", she told viewers.

“I hope Manchester United fans weren’t offended by it.”

She then explained: “Someone was training to learn how to use the ticker and to put text on the ticker, so they were just writing random things not in earnest - and that comment appeared.

“Apologies if you saw that and you were offended, and you’re a fan of Manchester United.

“That was certainly a mistake and it wasn’t meant to appear on the screen.”

Fellow BBC News presenter Clive Myrie, who is also a Manchester City fan, poked fun at the gaffe on Twitter.

He wrote: “I had nothing to do with this!! #mcfc.”
