BBC announces major shake-up of 6 Music evening radio schedule

The BBC has announced a major shake-up of its 6 Music schedule — meaning a Manc music legend will only host a standalone show once a week.

From June, Marc Riley will share his evening slot with Gideon Coe as part of a slew of changes to the station’s night-time programming. A new show, called New Music Fix Daily, will occupy the 7pm-9pm slot from Monday to Thursdays.

That will be fronted by Tom Ravenscroft and Deb Grant, presenting from Salford. Riley & Coe will then follow that, from 10pm to midnight, with Marc taking over duties on Mondays, Gideon on Thursdays, and the pair co-hosting on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Despite losing his full-time solo show, ex-Fall guitarist Riley said he was relishing the new programme. “I’ve been calling Gid ‘The Guv’nor’ for the last 16 years so this is my chance to learn from the best in the business,” he explained.

“We’ll be joining forces to do what we’ve both always done on 6 Music - sharing music and sessions from the artists we love.”

Gideon Coe added: “Marc plays great records and hosts fantastic sessions. I very much look forward to doing that alongside him. I also look forward to continuing to provide late-night radio for the 6 Music listeners. They remain the most important part of any programme.”

In between the two new shows, from 9pm-10pm, will be an Artist In Residence slot. Previously going out over the weekends, Artist In Residence hosts have included Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Phoebe Bridgers, Fontaines D.C., Loyle Carner, St. Vincent, Wolf Alice, Beabadoobee, IDLES, Jamie T, Perfume Genius and Father John Misty.

6 Music’s weekly New Music Fix and New Album Fix shows (Fridays, 12am-5am), will also continue, with Jamz Supernova joining the New Music Fix family of Steve Lamacq and Mary Anne Hobbs, curating an hour of her favourite brand new tracks for listeners, from 2am-3am. Jamz currently presents Jamz Supernova on 6 on Saturdays (1pm-3pm).
