Battle-hardened Vinesh Phogat secures Paris Olympics quota

Two-time World Championships medallist Vinesh Phogat, a leading face of the protest against former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, secured on Saturday the quota place for the Paris Games, defeating Kazakhstan’s Laura Ganikyzy in the women’s 50kg semifinals of the Asian Olympic qualifiers in Bishkek.

Later, two other Indian wrestlers, Anshu Malik (57kg) – the 2021 World Championships silver medallist – and Reetika (76kg), the U23 world champion, also booked their Olympic berths after reaching the finals of their respective weight categories.
