A Goddess You Build With Your Own Hands
Bathukamma begins not in a temple but in a field. The flowers used, tangedu, gunugu, banti, celosia, cucumber flowers, are not cultivated for the occasion. They grow wild after the monsoon, in the margins of tanks and along bund walls, and the women who gather them know exactly where to look. The stacking is deliberate: each layer a different flower, the colours graduating from the base upward, the whole structure rising into a cone that can stand taller than the woman who built it. The name means, roughly, "come alive, mother", a summons, not a description. The goddess does not arrive from elsewhere. She is assembled, layer by layer, from what the season has left behind.
