What the Festival Actually Is
Bathukamma is a flower festival of Telangana, celebrated by women in the nine days leading up to Durgashtami in the Bhadrapada month of the Telugu calendar. The name means "come alive, mother", an address to the goddess Gauri embedded in each stack. Women build the stacks fresh each evening from seasonal wildflowers: gongura for its red-veined leaves, tangedu for its yellow clusters, gunugu for its white sprays, and banti marigolds as the anchor layer at the base. Each stack is a stepped cone, wider at the bottom, narrowing to a turmeric-smeared top where a small Gauri idol or banana flower sits. The women carry these on their heads to the nearest lake, pond, or river at dusk, set them on the water, and walk circles around them singing Bathukamma songs, call-and-response verses about rain, harvest, and the goddess returning. On the ninth evening, Saddula Bathukamma, the stacks do not come back.
