The Mets swept the Diamondbacks this week in Arizona, with the final game a blowout 9–0 win on Thursday. As is the case in baseball blowouts, the SNY broadcast had to fill time, and Keith Hernandez did so by contemplating his own mortality.
When Gary Cohen asked Hernandez whether he’d stay up to watch the Mets play in San Diego this weekend, Hernandez said he feels the need to enjoy life more instead.
“You know, as I’ve gotten older, I like to get up early and enjoy the full day,” Hernandez said during a Daniel Vogelbach at-bat. “I haven’t got too many days left.”

Hernandez will turn 70 in the fall, a feat that he admits is “daunting,” but Cohen tried to convince him that he still has plenty of time left.
“With modern medicine and technology, you should live at least to be 100,” Cohen said.
However, Hernandez seemed complacent to settle for half of that remaining time.
“I’ll take 15 years, 85 (years old),” he said. “I’ll take that.”
This entire conversation amused many Mets fans who have not had the best time watching their team underachieve this year.

New York has won six straight games as they try to make up ground in the NL playoff picture. Meanwhile, Hernandez grapples with the idea of hitting a milestone birthday at his age.
