Barry Ferguson tells Rangers to get prepared for 'full-blown crisis' if they suffer at Motherwell

Barry Ferguson reckons the Rangers players have not seen anything like the criticism that will follow if they drop points at Motherwell on Sunday.

There's questions being asked of manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst and his players after a 7-1 mauling in the Champions League against Liverpool. But Ferguson reckons it's the Motherwell game which could spark proper outrage within the Light Blues camp, currently sitting two points behind Celtic in the title race and that might be five come kick-off on Sunday.

Defeat to Liverpool left him cringing, however, a result in Lanarkshire is now paramount. He wrote in his Daily Record column: "There was steam coming out of my ears on Wednesday as a bad night became an unforgivable one. So I’m not about to make excuses for a performance and a result which humiliated Rangers fans all over the country. It was unacceptable. It was painful.

"There’s more than enough for the manager and his squad to play for this season and now is not the time for a drastic overreaction. But - and let me make this clear - that doesn’t mean questions can’t be asked after that 7-1 battering.

"They absolutely have to be. They need to have some honest conversations about where it went so badly wrong. And the manager will have to work out, who needs to be told some home truths and who needs an arm around his shoulder.

"Because, with just three days to prepare for Motherwell away, they don’t have time to mope around feeling sorry for themselves or they really will find out what a full blown crisis feels like.

"It’s not a nice position to be in. It’s sore and it’s hard for any professional to handle. But these players are the only ones who can do something to stop the hurting. And that has to start on Sunday with three points at Fir Park."
