Barcelona and Nike have unveiled the club's new kit for the upcoming 2023/2024 season.
The Spanish champions have stuck to their traditional style with this one but the club say there's a simple detail that echoes the club's 'pioneering spirit' and that makes it stand out from all other Barca shirts - a diamond that frames the club badge. Barca says the diamond represents the first women’s team to ever play a game of football at the Camp Nou.
The symbolic diamond honours the first women’s supporters’ club from 1971. The story begins in 1970, when Inma Cabeceran sent a letter to the then FC Barcelona president, Agustí Montal i Costa, proposing creating a women’s football team, which resulted in a behind closed doors women’s football match played at the Camp Nou.
That game proved the spark for the first FC Barcelona women’s supporters club to be formed a year later in 1971, which used the Club badge combined with a diamond for their logo. Bareclona says: "The diamond represents the first women’s team to ever play a game of football at the Spotify Camp Nou, an example of Barça’s pioneering spirit, always adopting a leading role in both sport and society, allied with continued success.”
Featuring five slightly fractured blaugrana stripes across the front with the sponsors’ logos in white, the kit keeps the club's iconic colours front and centre. Like their fierce rivals, Real Madrid, who launched their own history inspired kit yesterday, the Barca strip delves deep into the clubs past for inspiration in what seems to be a trend emerging across Europe for many shirt releases this summer.
Xavi's side will be sporting the new strip for the upcoming season where they will be looking to build on a successful 22/23 campaign that saw them capture the La Liga title, however after an underwhelming showing in Europe, they will be hoping to restore their guile and dominance on the continent next season.
