Legendary toy figure “Barbie” is on track to outperform the renowned video game icon “Super Mario Bros.” — at least when it comes to movie revenue.
What Happened: Directed by Greta Gerwig, the “Barbie” movie has resonated deeply with global viewers, eclipsing “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” in domestic ticket sales. The film’s earnings have reached a staggering $575.4 million, The Hollywood Reporter reports.
With its worldwide collections nearing $1.3 billion, “Barbie” is hot on the heels of the video game-based movie’s $1.36 billion total. The movie’s appeal is set to intensify as Warner Bros. (NYSE: WB) announces IMAX screenings of the film, promising fans a captivating viewing experience featuring stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.
“We made ‘Barbie’ for the big screen, so it’s a thrill to be able to bring it to Imax, the biggest screen of all,” Gerwig told Variety in a statement. “As a special thanks to ‘Barbie’ fans, we’re excited to share a little bit more of our cast and crew’s incredible work by adding special new footage we hope audiences will enjoy.”
Since its joint premiere with “Oppenheimer” on July 21, “Barbie” has dominated the box office charts. It not only secured a spot among the all-time top 20 revenue-generating films but also overtook Christopher Nolan’s 2008 sensation “The Dark Knight” as Warner Bros.’ top earner in the U.S.
This achievement is particularly significant, given that Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” has garnered nearly $725 million.
Both Robbie and Gosling have witnessed their most triumphant box office performances with “Barbie,” surpassing their earlier successes, “Suicide Squad” and “Blade Runner 2049.”
