Barbie sequel ‘already in the works’ after $1 billion success of Margot Robbie toy movie

A sequel to the $1 billion Barbie movie is reportedly already in the works.

The blockbuster, which stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, has been one of the biggest movies of all time. And now, sources say a second film is being discussed.

A source told The Sun: “The crew who worked on the Barbie film have been contacted to discuss working on the follow-up.

“It is very early days, but it’s become apparent that bosses want the same crew for the sequel as they did for the first.

“Emails have been sent but firmer details have to be finalised.”

The film is based on the beloved Mattel toy character. It was directed and co-written by Greta Gerwig with her husband Noah Baumbach. Robbie, 33, produced it.

Robbie is said to be the main driving force behind the movie after she went to toy-maker Mattel for the rights in 2018.

Robbie then had to pitch the movie to film companies – and she even reported it would make $1 billion at the box office.

In an interview with Collider she said: “I think I told them that it’d make a billion dollars, which maybe I was overselling, but we had a movie to make, okay?”

Barbie is the highest grossing film of the year so far at the UK and Ireland box office.

The blockbuster comedy took £67.5 million in its first three weeks on release – enough to push the previous chart-topper, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, into second place on £54.6 million.

Barbie’s success at the box office could see it go on to beat last year’s biggest earning film, Top Gun: Maverick, which took £83.7 million.

It is not just the film that has been a runaway success, with Dua Lipa on course to claim her fourth number one single as her Barbie soundtrack song Dance The Night climbs up the UK charts.

The 27-year-old singer’s disco anthem is predicted to rise two spots to claim the top spot next Friday, according to the Official Charts Company’s first look.

The influence of Gerwig’s Barbie movie continues further down the chart as Billie Eilish’s contemplative What Was I Made For? – which also features on the soundtrack – is currently set to hold on to its number two slot.

While the reworking of Aqua’s Barbie World by rappers Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice is expected to take the ninth spot this upcoming week.
