Bank holidays for Christmas Day and New Year's Day moved

Christmas Day this year falls on a Sunday, but the bank holiday will not be on December 25. If a bank holiday is on a weekend, a ‘substitute’ weekday becomes a bank holiday, normally the following Monday.

2022 marks the most number of UK bank holidays held in one 12 month period for at least five years, following the Queen's Jubilee and the bank holiday the state funeral of Queen Elizabeth II.

As Christmas Day and New Year's Day fall at weekend, substitute bank holiday days will take place following both dates. Employers don't have to give staff paid leave on bank or public holiday and bank holidays might affect how and when your benefits are paid. This year, the Christmas Day bank holiday will be observed on December 27, Liverpool Echo reports.

The New Year's Day bank holiday will not be held on January 1, but rather January 2. It's important to note Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve are not bank holidays.
