Fears Bulwell 'will turn into nothing' as NatWest bank announces closure

Residents in Bulwell have spoken out about how they're "scared the area will turn into nothing" as a NatWest branch is closing down.

Previously, it was reported that NatWest had announced that it planned to close 32 branches of NatWest and the Royal Bank of Scotland banks with Nottingham, with the NatWest branch in Bulwell to close on May 26.

Residents in Bulwell have spoken out about their concern for the branch closing.

Retired Margaret Hunt, 65, who lives in the town, said she doesn't like going into the centre anymore.

She said: "I'd rather not have to go into town, this branch is just so handy.

"It's not just about this bank closing down, its about what will close down next. Places just seem to keep closing down in Bulwell all the time. I'm the scared the area will turn to nothing.

"I'd like to see another bank or another shop to keep on supporting businesses in Bulwell."

Tony Brown, 45, who works in a supermarket, explained his elderly friend doesn't have WiFi and often comes to the branch.

Mr Brown, who was born in Bulwell and lives in Beechdale, said: "I think the nearest branch from here is Basford and there's parking down at that site, I can't see or understand why this branch is closing down, if you look in there now, you'll see it's really busy.

"My friend uses this branch and he doesn't use online banking, he's old school like that.

"This NatWest has been here for donkey's, I remember it as a kid. I don't think it's fair, when this branch closes people like my friend will have to make other arrangements and I know a lot of people who who rather come here than the city centre."

Steve Collins, 59, a builder from Bulwell, was sad to see the branch go.

He said: "It is a shame that this is closing down. It's been here for ages and it's convenient for people. I don't mind going into town but what about people who do? If this bank closes down, I'd like to simply see another bank open.

"People round here are fed up of things closing down."

It comes after popular food store Budget Wise's announced its decision to shut in the near future due to low footfall.

Meanwhile, the NatWest City Centre branch in Nottingham's Victoria Centre is due to close permanently on Wednesday, July 6.
