Bangkok-based fitness coach Leroy Saunders has died after collapsing and losing consciousness during the Hyrox Bangkok 2026 competition last Thursday, his family said on Tuesday.
The 41-year-old South African was resuscitated and taken to hospital after collapsing during the event at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center, according to a statement posted on his Instagram account.
The statement said the circumstances surrounding his death were not yet fully understood, and asked Hyrox and the media to hold off on commenting until his family and team were certain about what had happened.
“What we can share without doubt is that until the last second of this moment, Leroy lived his life without regret or hesitation and impacted hundreds if not thousands to do the same throughout his journey,” said a statement posted on his Instagram page.
“We are aware everyone would like closure and a better understanding, and we are working hard to be able to offer this when the time is right.”
Saunders owned IAOT CrossFit in Bangkok, and was known for strength and conditioning work with combat athletes. He founded Fight by Design, a physical training programme for Muay Thai fighters, MMA athletes and boxers.
Hyrox is an extreme test of endurance that has attracted a wide global following, as well as occasional controversy, since its founding in 2017 by a Swiss entrepreneur.
The race combines 8 kilometres of running with eight intense workout stations, pushing the cardiovascular and musculoskeletal systems to their limits.
While not inherently dangerous for healthy, well-prepared participants, Hyrox comes with physical risks. Cardiologists in particular have warned participants to monitor their heart health closely.
