Ballymena Utd fan hopes random stat is good omen for Irish Cup final

Some might say it's clutching at straws, but one Ballymena United fan hopes one random stat is a positive omen heading into Sunday's Irish Cup final.

The last time the Sky Blues won the cup was back in 1989, but have lost three more finals since then including two in the past three seasons.

They beat Larne 34 years ago thanks to Paul Hardy's back-heeled goal. They also finished ninth in the league.

And it is that league stat that supporter Jonny Davison is clinging onto heading into Sunday's decider against Crusaders, after Ballymena also finished ninth in this season's Premiership.

"Last year was the worst feeling I have experienced in my entire life, so hopefully Sunday goes a bit better," Jonny told BBC's Good Morning Ulster, referring to last season's agonising defeat to the Crues in the final.

"Ballymena have never won it during my lifetime. I have been to every cup final we have lost over the last six finals, so you'd like to think at some point we are going to win one.

"And the last time we won the Irish Cup we finished ninth in the league, so I am taking that as a positive omen. I have to grasp at something."

Jonny has travelled over from Falkirk for Sunday's final, and he hopes the trip will be worthwhile come Sunday tea-time.

He believes it will take a collective effort for Ballymena to finally get their hands on the trophy.

"It is going to have to be a proper team effort because of the gulf in class between us and the top five," he added.

"But if we get David McDaid on the ball and he can do what he does best then we still have a good chance.

"I have had games on in the pub in Falkirk. I had the semi-final on and we watched it. It was great."
