A Baldur's Gate 2 remake is reportedly in the works, with one former lead returning to the dev team.
That's according to PC Gamer, who reports that – according to an anonymous source – original Baldur's Gate 2 lead designer Kevin Martens is working on the remake now. PCG notes that Martens had already been working with Wizards of the Coast recently thanks to contributions on Archetype Entertainment's upcoming sci-fi RPG Exodus, which WoTC is publishing.
While Baldur's Gate 2 is the RPG at the heart of this rumor, it's claimed that Baldur's Gate 1 is also likely to be getting its own remake, which makes an awful lot of sense when you consider that, well, 2 is a direct sequel, with its plot continuing straight on from the first. Hell, in the original RPGs, you can even import your character to pick things up right where you left off. With that in mind, it'd be a slightly strange decision to launch a remake of the second game first.
Of course, both Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate 2 have been given remasters before now in the form of their respective Enhanced Editions, so it wouldn't be the first time that they were brought back into the limelight. No indication has been given of when these rumored remake(s) could be released, though, so we could be in the dark for a while yet.
If it's to be believed, fans can expect plenty of Baldur's Gate goodness in the future, at least. Wizards of the Coast president John Hight previously confirmed that "of course, we're going to do a successor" to Baldur's Gate 3, so Baldur's Gate 4 will happen eventually, too, even if Larian won't be the studio making it. For now, the BG3 masterminds are busy working on Divinity, the studio's next big RPG.
