Baldur’s Gate TV series in development at HBO with Craig Mazin, will continue Baldur’s Gate 3 story

HBO is developing a Baldur’s Gate TV series that will continue the story after Baldur’s Gate 3, with The Last of Us co-creator Craig Mazin attached to create, write, executive produce, and serve as showrunner, per an exclusive report by Deadline.

Mazin’s name is known to anyone interested in video game adaptations – he co-created one of the most successful modern examples via HBO’s The Last of Us. He’s positioning Baldur’s Gate as a direct follow-up to the events of the game, rather than a direct adaptation.

The TV series will tell the stories of everyone’s beloved characters after the events of the game. Mazin is said to be a big fan of Baldur’s Gate 3 and wants to carry forward what Larian and Wizards of the Coast built:

After putting nearly 1000 hours into the incredible world of Baldur’s Gate 3, it is a dream come true to be able to continue the story that Larian and Wizards of The Coast created. I am a devoted fan of D&D and the brilliant way that Swen Vincke and his gifted team adapted it. I can’t wait to help bring Baldur’s Gate and all of its incredible characters to life with as much respect and love as we can, and I’m deeply grateful to Gabe Marano and his team at Hasbro for entrusting me with this incredibly important property.

While details like casting, timeline, and episode count weren’t announced, the “continuation” approach comes with an immediate creative problem. Baldur’s Gate 3 is built on player choice, so a TV version will need to pick a canon path, or at least a canon starting point.

Per Deadline’s report, Mazin has creative freedom over the direction of the story, as whichever studio Hasbro chooses to eventually make Baldur’s Gate 4 will have to tell a new story in this universe.

Larian doesn’t look to have any involvement in the Baldur’s Gate TV series, staying consistent with Swen Vincke’s words that the studio is completely done with the game and the full focus now lies on the upcoming Divinity, which was presented at the Game Awards 2025.

Hasbro looks to be delighted with the decision to adapt the continuation of Baldur’s Gate 3, as the company’s Head of Television Gabriel Marano comments:

The fans have been eagerly awaiting an adaptation of Baldur’s Gate, and we could not ask for better partners than HBO and the incomparable Craig Mazin to build this world with.

We will publish any details about this TV series as they become available.
