His political entry with the formation of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam in 2005 and its vote consolidation in Tamil Nadu posed a significant threat to the two powerful parties in the state – the DMK and AIADMK. In less than a decade, he quickly rose to the position of leader of the opposition in the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly.
