Baffled Edinburgh Asda shoppers locked in store after group of yobs tried to enter

Shoppers in Edinburgh were left baffled last night as they were locked in an Asda superstore after a group of yobs tried to enter.

The incident took place at the Chesser Branch just before midnight on Thursday, June 8 as staff locked doors and waited for police to come after a gang of teens previously known to the store for anti-social behaviour tried to enter.

Images show police cars outside the store while another snap shows confused shoppers waiting inside the store behind locked doors.

Edinburgh Live understands that an anti-social group had tried to enter the store, so staff shut the doors until the police arrived and the group left.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: "Officers attended due to an alarm having sounded. There was no complaint made and no criminality was established."

An Asda spokesperson also confirmed that an anti-social group had tried to enter the store and police were called.

This comes just weeks after the same store was forced to close early after multiple arrests were made following reports of antisocial behaviour.

Several arrests were made after police swooped on the Asda at Chesser on Wednesday, May 17, following reports of antisocial behaviour.

Speaking to Edinburgh Live, Sergeant Mark Coull said: "We know that anti-social behaviour of youths in our local communities causes concern."

He added: "We have increased patrols in the area and a number of youths have consequently been arrested and charged. We continue to work with partner agencies to help tackle anti-social behaviour.

“Tackling anti-social behaviour is a priority for Edinburgh police. Where instances do occur we would encourage these to be reported to officers via 101 so that we can investigate accordingly.”
