Baffled American tourist visiting Ireland shares 'culture shock' at recurring feature of Galway trees

An American tourist in Galway has shared her bewilderment with online audiences after finding “trees in cages” all over the city.

TikTok user yourgirrlceline took to the platform to express her horror at finding many growing trees enclosed in fencing along a busy Galway street.

“We’re in Galway, Ireland right now. Could someone please explain why all of the trees are caged? Look- they are all in cages. What is the purpose?”, the user asks as she gestures comically to a tree beside her, visibly confused.

It did not take long for viewers to branch out into the comments section to respond. Sadly for the creator, people were more preoccupied with pointing out her unfortunate mispronunciation of the word ‘Galway’ than giving her a direct answer.

One viewer joked that the trees were “once tourists who kept pronouncing Galway wrong” and urged the tourist to remedy her mistake.

More cerebral users informed her that the cages around the young trees were in place to prevent damage caused by passing traffic and animals. The structure also enables trees to keep a straight trunk and not get bent out of shape.

However, the user quickly realised the trend extended beyond Irish soil. She videoed herself finding rock structures in Edinburgh that were also encased in fencing.

The video has logged over 150,000 views to date and has clearly inspired Irish TikTok to spruce up on their plant-related puns.

One viewer speculated that the mispronunciation may have been a ploy for the video to get more attention, which did not go unnoticed by the original creator.

“The world will never know,” she cryptically captioned underneath the observation.
