'Bad news for Dublin 15' after PayPal announces hundreds of jobs at risk

Over 300 jobs in Dublin and Louth are at risk after online payment company PayPal "proposed to remove a selection of roles" at its Irish offices.

135 jobs at their Blanchardstown office at Ballycoolin Business Park are at risk as well as 172 roles at their Dundalk site.

Employees in the affected areas were notified by the company earlier today.

A spokesman for PayPal told Dublin Live that the proposal was made "following a review of its operational needs" and is "subject to consultation".

He said: "The changes will help us scale our business to meet the evolving needs of our customers, ready for our next chapter of growth.

"We are proposing a reduction of 307 roles in Ireland: 135 roles in Dublin, 172 roles in Dundalk.

"PayPal notified employees in the affected teams of the consultation today, 24 May 2022."

"PayPal remains committed to Ireland and our Dublin and Dundalk sites will continue to be among our largest global centres for employment and operations, supporting our customers. We will continue to employ well over 2,000 employees after the proposed changes."

The spokesman added that PayPal is "committed to ensuring that colleagues who leave under the proposed changes are treated fairly and generously".

"We are offering enhanced redundancy and support packages to help them as they move to the next step in their careers," he said.

Sinn Fein TD Paul Donnelly described the situation as "bad news for Dublin 15".

He has called on the Government to "to work with the affected staff to over see that this process is voluntary and the workers affected receive their full entitlements and provide offers of income support and options of further education and training."

Deputy Donnelly also said he will "make representation to PayPal and the Government to ensure the remaining jobs at Ballycoolin are protected."
