Back to the Future VHS tape sells for $75,000 dollars as film fans urged to 'check cupboards'

Alex Jones has urged viewers of The One Show to check their cupboards for VHS cassettes after a rare copy of an '80s classic sold for a huge sum.

In a video broadcast on Thursday's edition of the BBC magazine show, journalist Joe Crowley explained that a sealed Back to the Future tape sold for $75,000 at an auction in the United States last week. The value of a cassette is dependent on its condition and whether it was part of a limited release or first batch.

Crowley visited Videodyssey in Liverpool, which is the last VHS-only store in the UK. The owner of the store, Andy, said: "There must be some films out there that the only copy is in someone's attic. If you've got a copy of The Evil Dead or some old horror films – Jaws is particularly sought after – then you could be on to a nice little earner."

Commenting on the report, Jones said: "So the simple message is: 'check that cupboard. "Bring them back, I say – in a big way". Co-presenter Gethin Jones added. "Search the house tonight."

Fans of the show took to Twitter to share their excitement. @TheRealDeclanK1 said: "Watching #TheOneShow is making me feel old. I had hundreds of VHS and yet I don’t have any now. Little did I know that they would be worth so much money these days".

@garyhayles85 posted: "I still have the VHS Star Wars original trilogy remastered. Ha ha kerching." @GlennPowys commented: "Have a Betamax tape still in its cellophane…."

The One Show airs weekdays at 7pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
