Tyler Wright is racing the clock to be ready for the World Surf League's season-opening event at Bells Beach in April after her latest injuries left her out of the water for seven months and contemplating retirement.
The two-time world champion has battled serious illness and injury throughout her stellar career, but said the pain from deterioration in her sacroiliac joint and discs in her back left her struggling to sit and stand, let alone surf.
Wright told AAP the hip and back issues were the product of other injuries to her back, shoulder, neck and ankles throughout the season, and trying to compensate for them had left her a twisted mess.
