Baby name experts share 'old money names' that could jump back into fashion

Picking out a baby name isn't always as easy as it sounds - with some parents spending the full nine months mulling over their options. It's important to choose real world.

To help parents make this all-important decision, experts at Nameberry have been sharing the 'old money names' that could make their way up the popularity list in the coming years. An expert said: "Old money names conjure the aspirational lifestyle provided by generational wealth — elite country clubs, prep schools, and holidays. Old money names serve as connectors to past generations.

"This can be in a literal sense, through family surnames or handing down notable first names to descendants. It can also be more ephemeral, through the old money style. The old money aesthetic is less about how names sound and more about how names feel — historic, dignified, and ever-so-slightly out of touch."

But for parents not wanting to fully commit to an 'old money name', they could consider giving a nickname a try.

"Many old money names could be described as formal and buttoned-up, but old money nicknames are cheeky and irreverent," she said.

"Jrs, IIIs, IVs, etc. are common in old money families, and many of these derivatives arose as a way to distinguish father and son, mother and daughter.

"Trey is a standard nickname for a III, Fritz has been used for Vs, and Chip comes from the saying 'chip off the old block'."
