A woman has given birth to a baby boy in a Ukrainian village cut off by Russian forces using the help of a remote midwife on Friday.
The at-home delivery took place in the village of Kandybino, which is to the north of the Black Sea port Mykolaiv in southern Ukraine, the Kyiv Post reported.
Mykolaiv governor Vitaly Kim said the woman, who is a “young mother”, was intending to travel to the city’s maternity hospital to give birth.
However, she was unable to do so due to Russian forces occupying positions between Kandybino and Mykolaiv by blocking civilian traffic and at times firing on it.
A remote midwife talked the woman through the birth using a video link, the statement said.
The mother and her baby boy are doing fine, it added.
Images later published by Mr Kim and other Ukrainian media showed the woman being assisted by a younger woman.
Russian forces began attacks on Mykolaiv more than one week ago, beginning with helicopter-borne assault infantry landings at Mykolaiv airport.
Some of the heaviest fighting has been seen in the south of the country, as Russian troops attempt to take control of the Black Sea coastline.
They occupy the city of Kherson and are surrounding Mariupol.
The UK Ministry of Defence said in an intelligence update on Thursday that protests against Russian occupation have been reported throughout the week in the Russian-held cities of Kherson, Melitopol and Berdyansk.
Some 400 protestors were reportedly detained by Russian forces in the Kherson Oblast yesterday.
Ukrainian forces remain in control of the port city Mykolaiv, but it is coming under very heavy bombardment.
