B&Q selling summer hot tubs for just £199 - but there's a catch

DIY and home improvement retailer B&Q has this week announced a special offer on a sought-after hot tub, selling the product for less than £200.

The Lay-Z-Spa St Lucia three-person hot tub usually retails for around £285 in store - but the DIY giant has slashed the price down to £199 this week.

However, many have took to social media to warn that there's a further price to pay for the luxury of a hot tub in your garden, with electricity bills currently soaring due to the ongoing cost of living crisis.

When the energy price cap changed in April earlier this year, energy saving experts warned that owners of budget hot tubs could see increases of £300 per month through the cost of constantly running the appliance.

It was also revealed that the cost of running a hot tub is now 60 per cent higher than it was in the summer of 2020 - when many people bought hot tubs while confined to their gardens during the national UK lockdown.

Posting in the Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK group on Facebook, Sharon Guichard wrote: "£199 bargain at B&Q if you can afford the electric!"

And many wasted no time whatsoever in pointing out the inflated cost of running the luxury overall, in a time where many people are struggling to get by.

Jeanette Walker said: "My mate had hers on a month to see what it would cost - £249 her electric bill for month," while Emma Charles, added: "Mine costs £40-50 a week to run so for now we aren’t using."

Craig Bretland, wrote: "Put mine on the other day… cost me £10 to heat up and the same the following day!" while Natalie Winsborough commented: "I’ve got a brand new one sitting in my shed box not even opened yet, scared to set it all up with people saying how much it’s costing to run."

Many others took to the post to share words of advice on how to save money while still enjoying a similar experience.

Amanda Kowalski, said: "I just fill my reasonable pool up with hot water from washer in feed pipe (I have a hot feed pipe) for the amount of time spent in it the water stays nice and then place a cover over," while another said: "It’s cheaper to run it like a bath of the hot water tap."

Have you got a hot tub? Is it as expensive as people say it is to run one?
