A powerful storm from the Azores is set to sweep across the UK, bringing heavy snowfall to several regions. Weather maps from Ventusky indicate that the massive storm, originating from the west of Portugal, will hit the UK at midnight on March 9, with some areas expecting up to 13cm (5 inches) of snow.
The storm is forecast to primarily impact southwest England and the Midlands, with Swindon and surrounding towns bracing for the heaviest snowfall, up to 13cm. Other areas expected to experience significant snowfall include Northampton, which is predicted to receive 4 inches, and Leicester and Peterborough, each set for 3 inches of snow. In addition, lighter snowfall is anticipated in Birmingham and Lincoln, with each receiving approximately an inch, reported the Mirror.
Although the Met Office’s long-range forecast from March 1 to March 10 does not explicitly mention snow, it hints at the arrival of “high pressure” and “unsettled conditions” which will become more prominent across the country. This suggests the potential for cold and snowy weather as March progresses.
The Met Office stated: “A split in weather conditions is likely across the country for the start of spring. Northwestern areas will likely see spells of rain and stronger winds as Atlantic weather systems arrive from the west. Spells of wet and windy weather will move southeast to some degree across the country at times.”
However, high pressure is expected to influence southern areas in the early part of March, bringing dry, fine weather with possible night frosts and morning fog patches. As the month continues, unsettled weather conditions are predicted to become more widespread, with temperatures remaining generally average, although some milder spells are also possible.
The Azores storm will be one to watch, with forecasters warning residents in affected regions to prepare for potentially hazardous weather conditions, including snow, rain, and strong winds.
