Ayrshire village's first gala since the millennium boasts stalls, afternoon teas, petting zoo and alpacas

A South Ayrshire village is gearing up to host its first gala since the millennium.

Minishant is excited to see its tiny village school throw open its gates for some festivities next Saturday, August 27.

The community has been throwing fundraising events throughout the year, including a psychic night and a race night, in order to fund the much-anticipated gala, which hasn’t been held in 22 years.

The celebration, held at Minishant Primary on Merrick Crescent, will see gala-goers enjoy various stalls, entertainment and even a petting zoo between 12noon and 5pm.

Nicole Bryden, of Minishant social and leisure group, said: “This will be the first gala there’s been in Minishant in 22 years, since the millennium.

“We’ve been trying to raise money to put the gala on.

“There’s not a parade as such because you need to get the police and roads alliance to shut the roads, which if that’s to happen next year then we’ll go down that road.

“But we’ve got a piper piping the king, queen, page boy and attendant along the village and in through the school gates.

“We’ve got stalls, West Coast Castles providing inflatables, a free mini zoo – so you don’t need to buy a wristband if you only want to come and see the mini zoo.

“We’ve got home baking, a local company called Fat Friends are providing afternoon teas, Foggy’s food van and the local ice cream van coming.

“And one of the stall holders is bringing alpacas!”

Also on the bill are the Territorial Army, performances from local dance schools and prizes to be won by attendees who take on the challenge of coming in fancy dress.

Nicole added: “We’ve asked people if they want to come fancy dress then that’s optional and there’s prizes. It was just a wee extra thing to get some of the kids involved.

“I’m hoping it’ll be a success because there’s not very many galas about this year.”
