Ayrshire town could be handed 'bank hub' lifeline as town's remaining bank prepares to close

A new ‘banking hub’ could fill the void that will be left when the Bank of Scotland branch in Troon’s Templehill closes later this year.

Ayrshire Live can reveal that the Ayrshire town has been identified for meeting the criteria for a ‘banking hub’ by the UK’S biggest cashline machine network (LINK).

The banking hub would operate much like any other bank, but it would be staffed by multiple tellers from different lenders.

Banking hubs are a new concept. So far only one Scottish pilot has operated in Cambuslang.

Early indications suggest that it is working effectively.

The hubs, a joint scheme by the Post Office and the major banks, enable routine banking facilities.

Each banking hub would be staffed so that face-to-face transactions can be carried out.

It’s also thought they’d feature a private room where more sensitive matters of finance can be discussed.

Ayrshire Live previously told how the Troon bank faced the axe due to the rise of online banking.

Siobhian Brown, MSP for Ayr, Prestwick and Troon, said she was disappointed that the Templehill bank will close on September 21.

However, she has given assurances that locals will have adequate banking services in the town.

She said: “This is a disappointing decision for the Bank of Scotland to take and will come as unwelcome news for the people of Troon and the staff who work at this branch.

“We know that bank closures have a damaging effect on our towns and small businesses, and they can hit the most vulnerable in our community who struggle or are unable to use internet banking and still rely heavily on cash.

“I am pleased to hear that LINK has assessed Troon as meeting the criteria for a Banking Hub which will ensure that residents will have continued access to essential banking and cash services.

“This would make Troon the second Banking Hub in Scotland after a successful trial in Cambuslang.

“There is the hope that Banking Hubs will be rolled out more widely which would benefit towns with a lack of access to banking facilities.”

Ms Brown has already held talks with the Access to Cash Action Group, who will be overseeing the rollout of these services.

She added: “I will also be working closely with the Troon community over the coming months who will be able to take a central role in how the Banking Hub will work best for them.”
