Ayrshire skin care clinic ordered to make rapid improvements following critical report

An Ayrshire skin care clinic has been told to make a raft of improvements to the service it provides following a critical report from a health and social care scrutiny body.

Two requirements and 10`recommendations have been placed upon AKA Aesthetics, at Prestwick Cross, after the business was put under the microscope by Healthcare Improvement Scotland (HIS).

Their inspection took place in July, but the HIS have only now published their findings.

The Prestwick firm has been told to address the requirements and make the necessary improvements “as a matter of priority.”

According to Health Improvement Scotland (HIS), the service “did not have” a policy in place to deal with medical emergencies in the event of a patient requiring CPR, going into anaphylactic shock, or for dealing with other emergencies such as vascular occlusion.

And HIS saw “no evidence” or guidance for staff over what to do in the event of an “adverse event.”

And “not all” patient care records had been “dated, timed or signed” by a practitioner.

During their inspection, HIS were also told that practitioners regularly “re-used medicines” for patient review appointments, a practice which did not comply with the manufacturer’s “guidance and best practice.”

In addition, the service “did not have” a formal quality improvement plan in place to “help structure its improvement activities,” “record” the outcomes and “measure” their impact.

The scrutiny body also said AKA Aesthetics showed “no evidence” that patient feedback was “evaluated” or used to “make improvements.”

Among the positives, HIS noted that patients were “very satisfied” with the service.

And the firm was graded ‘satisfactory’ in terms of people’s experience of care.

Another positive was leadership of improvement and change, also graded ‘satisfactory.’

And the service environment was “clean and well maintained,” equipment was “fit for purpose,” the infection prevention and control policy was “up to date” and “additional cleaning” was introduced in response to the COVID-19 pandemic- and still being carried out to minimise the risk of transmission.

However, the service was nevertheless deemed ‘unsatisfactory’ in terms of HIS’s ‘safe delivery of care’ quality indicator.

HIS said: “This inspection resulted in two requirements and 10 recommendations.

“AKA Aesthetics Ltd, the provider, must address the requirements and make the necessary improvements as a matter of priority.”

AKA Aesthetics Ltd released a statement which read: "We welcome our feedback from HIS. An action plan has been developed and all recommendations highlighted in the report have been addressed.

"We continually strive to improve the service we provide."
