A brave 9-year-old has hopped aboard an Easter Egg Run after his open heart surgery to help raise funds in aid of Crosshouse Children’s Fund.
Dayn Montgomerry took part in the special event organised by the Hillbillies Motor Cycle Club.
The club's annual Easter Egg Run took place on Saturday, April 8 where £3807 was raised, the highest ever amount since the Hiilbillies MCC started their easter tradition 20 years ago.
Prestwick boy, Dayn, took part together with his family even though he has a complex heart condition and went through open heart surgery including the replacement of his conduit in the last six months.
He still found the strength to collect eggs, supplies and more for children's hospitals, the Ronald McDonald House and Yorkhill, with the help of the Scout Group, the 14th Ayrshire Scout Group.
Dayn works during the Easter and Christmas sessions, delivering essentials such as clothing, toys, crafts, toiletries and chocolate.
He sees it as a challenge to collect donations each year and the amount exceeds itself each time. And he has even been awarded a Parliamentary Motion for his good charity work last year.
Dayn’s mum, Karen, shared with Ayrshire Live that he is recovering well at home after the operation with the support of the Rainbow House nurses and clinic appointments after only six days in the hospital and hopes to return to school soon.
Karen said: “He was born with Truncus Arteriosus with an Interrupted Aortic Arch.
"It initially went undetected until a junior doctor found this complex heart defects pre-discharge from the Ayrshire Maternity Unit.
“He was nursed closely for a brief period within ICU then transferred to Glasgows RHC where he underwent a 12-hour open heart surgery at eight days old carried out by Professor Danton and his team.
“Dayn remained an inpatient for seven weeks before being discharged home where the community team continued home visits and outpatient clinic visits.”
Dayn's family have been supporting Glasgow RHC since he was a baby post-heart surgery and began to support Crosshouse Paediatrics five years ago.
His mum continued: “Dayn has been an inpatient within Paediatrics since he was one year old due to suffering from Pneumonia and Bronchiolitis.
"We felt that Crosshouse deserved recognition for the fundamental child services that they offer, the care that they have given Dayn and the fact that it needs more recognition within Ayrshire.
“Dayn currently carries out charity work during the Easter and Christmas sessions, delivering essentials such as clothing, toys, crafts, toiletries and chocolate. Dayn sees it as a challenge to collect donations each year and the amount exceeds itself each time.
“We initially felt that we wanted to give back to the hospital as they have been so kind during the time Dayn has been admitted. It has with Dayn's support from friends, family and businesses grown every year and we will continue to do this.”
Bryan Fleming, Hillbillies MCC Treasurer, commented: “Dayn and his family were all there at our recent Easter Egg Run with his dad riding the run with Dayn’s sister pillion.
“We are delighted that he was well enough to join us this year.
“Jock our co-president also had his grandson pillion at the front of the run. Ross’s gran raised a fantastic £1200 towards the event.
“We were also joined by multiple Motor Cycle Clubs from Ayrshire and Glasgow with most then going on to Rock the Nile in Ayr afterwards.
“We are very grateful for all the efforts and support of the families, friends and biking community to have raised so much this year.”
