Ayrshire beach horror as boy, 15, is seriously assaulted by gang

A teenager was seriously assaulted by a gang of youths on Irvine beach yesterday.

The 15-year-old was rushed to Crosshouse Hospital shortly after 5pm following the attack in the dunes.

Police have confirmed that the youngster remains in hospital today, although his condition or the extent of his injuries have not been disclosed.

Speculation online had suggested the victim had been stabbed but this is not the case.

Additional patrols were already in the area yesterday in a bid to quell any anti-social behaviour.

Police are now appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward.

Detective Inspector Stuart Dougan said: “This will have been a very frightening experience for the victim. The beach has been very busy this weekend and I would ask any witnesses who were in the area at the time, or anyone with information about the incident, to please get in touch.

“Additional officers are carrying out patrols to provide reassurance as people gather to enjoy the nice weather.”

Saltcoats CID can be contacted via 101, quoting reference 4680 of 4 June. Alternatively, information can be passed anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

The news emerges following a tragic day in the region as a person was struck and killed by a train near Ayr on Saturday evening.

British Transport Police said there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.
