Nottingham's Ay-Up Market will be going ahead, starting Friday, June 16, with three days of food, fun and live music. The stalls will be erected later than planned this evening due to the vigil in Old Market Square following the deaths of University of Nottingham students Barnaby Webber and Grace O'Malley-Kumar, both 19, and school caretaker Ian Coates, 65.
The three died from stab wounds following the attack in the early in the early hours of Tuesday, June 13. A 31-year-old man has been arrested by police.
Market organisers, It's in Nottingham and Nottingham City Council, are pressing on with the event in Slab Square. The free event will be open Friday, June 16, and Saturday, June 17, from 11am-8pm, and Sunday, June 18 from 11am-5pm.
A joint statement from It’s in Nottingham and the city council read: "Our city has been rocked and devastated by Tuesday’s tragic events and our thoughts remain with the friends, families and colleagues of Barnaby, Grace and Ian. As has been seen by this evening’s vigil, the Old Market Square is where we all go in Nottingham when there’s a need to grieve, celebrate or simply to be there to support one another.
“We stand with communities across the city in sadness and shock, and believe that holding the market is the right thing to do to reflect Nottingham’s diversity and spirit.
“As such, the market will go ahead as planned from 11am on Friday morning and run until 5pm on Sunday. We have obviously delayed the build today in order allow the vigil to be held.”
The market gives Nottingham-based independent retailers and creatives, both bricks and mortar and online, a unique trading platform that will highlight what they bring to the city. Curated by Pitch Presents, visitors can expect to see freshly baked goods, sweet treats, fine wine, vintage clothing, plants, skin care, arts, crafts, and handmade jewellery available from local independent retailers over the three days.
Some of the popular businesses taking part include Shop Zero, Slow Make Studio, Soul and Flare, Taste First, Treat Kitchen, Megan Crook Textiles, Sap Plants and Hallo Ceramics.
Alongside the market stalls, the event will also include a full programme of exciting live music and family-friendly performances, collectively arranged by local creative studio, Mimm & Phlexx Records, in collaboration with DHP Family.
