Avoca customers warned over undeclared allergen in popular chutney product as recall issued

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland has issued a recall on a popular Avoca product after it was found to contain an undeclared allergen.

In the notice published on Friday, the agency said all batches and best before dates of Avoca Cheesemonger Selection ‘Tomato Kasundi Chutney’ - pack size 200g - are being recalled.

This is because the product contains mustard, but it does not declare that on the list of ingredients on the label.

Eating the affected batches could be unsafe for anyone who is allergic to or is intolerant of mustard.

According to foodsafety.ie, for those who have an allergy to mustard, some of the issues ingesting it can cause include:

  • Facial flushing
  • Hives or itchy skin
  • Chest tightness
  • Runny nose
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Wheezing
  • Contact dermatitis
  • Swollen lips and tongue
  • Anaphylactic shock

The statement released on June 3 read: “All batches and best before dates of Avoca Cheesemonger Selection Tomato Kasundi Chutney are being recalled because they contain mustard which is not declared on the list of ingredients.

“This may make the affected batches unsafe for consumers who are allergic to or intolerant of mustard.”
