Avanti West Coast suspends ticket sales due to heatwave

Train operator Avanti West Coast has suspended ticket sales and advised passengers only to travel if necessary when the heatwave arrives next week.

The company, which operates the Liverpool Lime Street to London Euston route, announced on Friday that it will not sell any more tickets for services on July 18 and 19, citing the "extreme hot weather warnings". Latest BBC Weather forecasts state that Liverpool can expect highs of 35C on Monday (July 18) and 33C on Tuesday (July 19).

The latest forecast for London predicts a high of 40C on Monday and 37C on Tuesday. The Met Office has issued its first-ever red warning for extreme heat, covering Monday and Tuesday.

Avanti wrote on Twitter: "Due to the extreme heat weather warnings, we've suspended ticket sales for July 18 and 19 in order to minimise the number of people disrupted. Tickets will be back on sale once amended timetables are confirmed, but we do advise you to only travel if absolutely necessary."

The train company is already expecting disruption over the coming weekend due to a shortage of train crew. As a result, it has advised passengers not to travel unless necessary from July 16 to 19.

Passengers with tickets dated July 18 and 19 will be allowed to travel on July 20. However, those who choose not to travel will be issued with a full refund.

Other train operators have issued advice to passengers travelling in the heatwave. Merseyrail said:

  • Carry water and have something to eat in the morning before travelling.
  • Open windows to make the train more comfortable.
  • If you feel unwell on the train, please get off at the next station and seek help from a member of station staff. All station staff are first aid trained.

Transport for Wales has advised all passengers to carry water, while Network Rail has warned of disruption due to the heat.
