Authorities in Asheville have made significant progress in locating individuals reported missing after the devastating impact of Helene on the city. As per police reports, over 85% of the missing persons have been found within the city limits. Tragically, nine individuals have been confirmed deceased within Asheville, while the countywide death toll stands at 72.
Asheville Police Chief Mike Lamb provided an update, stating that out of the 394 missing persons initially reported, 336 have been located by search and rescue teams. Chief Lamb mentioned that efforts are ongoing to locate the remaining 60 individuals who are still unaccounted for.
Over the weekend, rescue crews carried out multiple operations, including five successful rescues of missing persons and welfare checks. Among those rescued were an elderly woman trapped in her home due to fallen trees, and a man with a broken leg stranded without communication.
Chief Lamb highlighted that a curfew is currently in place in Asheville from 7:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. This measure aims to ensure public safety as the city works on restoring essential services such as power and water. Lamb mentioned that authorities will reassess the curfew as conditions improve and businesses begin to reopen.
