Charles Gaines, the acclaimed author whose seminal work and documentary Pumping Iron propelled professional bodybuilding into the mainstream and introduced the world to Arnold Schwarzenegger, has died at 84.

His daughter, Greta Gaines, confirmed his passing Tuesday, though she did not disclose a cause. In a heartfelt tribute, she wrote: "You always marched to your own drummer and inspired everyone around you to do the same. Follow that bliss, catch that fish and kiss those lips while you can because my father was the live life to the fullest kinda guy."
